LAWRENCE ‘KRIS(NA)’ PARKER, also known as Teacha and KRS-I (Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone), was born on August 20, 1965. Although Parker has been putting out music long before many of us were born (around 87), it’s inexcusable to be unfamiliar with his music. His reggae and rap hybrid, boom box voice, lyricism and knowledge make him one of the first rappers to turn entertainment to edutainment.
Fact: KRS-1′s biological name is Lawrence Parker. The name KRS originated from KRISHNA-the Hindu God. During his time studying with Hare Krishnas he was teased by security guards, who would call him Krishna. Social services documented the name Krishna Parker on his transfer form. Over a period of time, Krishna eventually became Kris or Krs. The 1 added to KRS resulted from his graffiti days when he would tag his name. It was common for graffiti artist to add a number to their name. This, KRS-1 was born.
